VERANO PLACE AND PALO VERDE TRICK OR TREAT
Trick-or-Treat Friendly Apartments: If you would like to designate your apartment as a trick-or-treat friendly apartment all you need to do is post the orange pumpkin sign on your door. Signs will be available at the Verano Place Housing Office from 10/16/18. Simply post the sign on your front door when you are ready for trick-or-treaters, and remove the sign when you are no longer available to receive them. The Verano Place Housing Office can also e-mail the sign to you to print if you are unable to collect a sign during VP office hours.

Trick-or-Treaters:
When trick-or-treating in Palo Verde or Verano Place, look for the doors with an orange pumpkin posted. An orange pumpkin sign informs all residents that the apartment is a trick-or-treat friendly apartment. The pumpkin sign will be posted on the apartment door when they are able to receive you. If there is no orange pumpkin posted on the door, please move on to the next apartment where an orange pumpkin is posted. Please remember to thank residents for the treat when you leave their door, and be courteous of residents who do not have an orange pumpkin sign posted on their door. Be safe and have a Happy Halloween!

SPOTLIGHT ON-CAMPUS

WEEKLY WELLNESS TIP
Walk to Class: While taking public transportation might be quicker, walking will give you a chance to stretch your legs, burn some calories, clear your head, and relax before your first class.

ROOMMATE TIP
Clear Communication from the Get-Go: Probably the most important tip for any relationship of any kind! As roommates, you'll be sharing a small space for a long time, and you'll need to respect each other's needs and preferences. What do you know about yourself that you would like your roommate to know? Maybe you prefer for the dishes to be washed at the end of the day, not the next morning. Maybe you need some quiet time each morning before starting your day. Maybe you want the trash to be emptied as soon as it gets too full. Don't assume that your roommate will just figure all this out; communicate these needs, preferences, and expectations as soon as possible! This will save you both a lot of conflict.

UCI BICYCLE SECURITY
Bicycle security is a priority for UC Irvine. Below are steps you can take to deter theft:

* Always lock your bike. Lock your bike at all times, even if you only leave your bike for a minute.
* Use a strong lock. Use a strong lock (such as a U-lock) and attach the lock through the frame and rims of the bike.
* Use the lock correctly. Position your bike frame and wheels so that you take up as much of the open space within the U-portion of the lock as possible. The tighter the lock up, the harder it is for a thief to insert a pry bar and pry open your lock.
* Only use designated bike racks. Lock your bike to immovable and permanent objects, preferably a bike rack. Never lock to small trees, handrails, posts or chain link fences.
* Secure your components and accessories. Secure components that can be easily removed, like quick release wheels or seats.
* Register your bike. Registration is free and lasts forever (or until transfer of ownership). Begin the registration process by visiting our BOTS website<https://www.parking.uci.edu/bots/login.cfm>. Once you have completed the pre-registration, bring your bike to the UCI Transport and Distribution Services<https://www.parking.uci.edu/> located on the second floor of the Public Services Building<https://www.parking.uci.edu/parking/parkingoffice.cfm> to confirm the information and get your registration sticker.

If your bike is stolen on campus, be sure to report it to the UCI Police Department<http://police.uci.edu/police/index.php> at (949) 824-5223. Learn more<http://bike.uci.edu/bicycle-security/> about UCI bicycle security. Learn more<http://bike.uci.edu/general-info/bicycle-safety-and-operation/> about UCI bicycle safety and operation.

HELPFUL COMMUNITY REMINDERS

  * Visitor Parking: All residents receive 432 hours of visitor permissions per quarter (equivalent to 18 days). To activate visitor permissions visit VPMS<https://www.parking.uci.edu/permitless/login.cfm>. All you need to do is log in to your account, and record the license plate of each visitor's vehicle and the number of hours of the intended visit. Visitors may only park in designated ‘Visitor’ spaces. If you exhaust your hours before the quarter ends, you will not be given any additional hours.

  * Personal Barbecues and Hibachis are not permitted: The use or storage of any type of personal barbeque appliance is not permitted in Verano Place Housing (and all other UCI property). This includes all types of barbeques; propane, coal and electric. Please take advantage of the community gas barbeques provided by Verano Place Housing (located by the Verano Place Housing Office, Unit 7, and the Old Rec Center). Community barbecues are available on a first‐come, first‐serve basis.
  * No Smoking Policy: Smoking is not allowed on campus. This includes both the outside and inside of your apartment, university parking lots, walkways or grass areas, and playgrounds. Smoking in the community is a violation of your lease and could put your housing in jeopardy. We have received a high volume of complaints regarding residents and their guests smoking. Please be courteous of your neighbors by observing the campus non-smoking policy. This policy will be enforced as would any other infraction of lease or community policy wherein non-compliance may ultimately result in termination of tenancy.

We value your feedback and welcome any comments you may have to help improve your community, including the Gazette. Please email your suggestions and comments to avanboeyen at uci.edu<mailto:avanboeyen at uci.edu>.
