Subject: [Ucinet-ops-net] 22 jan 02, 11:15am-present: internet connectivity trouble
Message-ID:
greetings,
we're experiencing intermittent connectivity troubles from all external
networks to UCI. we have solution on the way. if all goes well, we'll have
this solved around 2:00pm.
at 11:15am, tuesday, the gigabit interface in the CalREN2 GSR router
located in the N&ACS central plant machine room began dropping the
link to our border router. we took preliminary steps to replace what
hardware we have - to no avail.
we have someone dispatched to obtain the spare gigabit ethernet interface
cards for the GSR from the CalREN2 NOC located in Los Alamitos. around
2:00pm, we will replace the suspect gigabit ethernet interface in
the GSR. we will lose connectivity to outside networks when the hardware
is exchanged for a few minutes.
in the meantime, you may have trouble reaching some sites on the commodity
internet as many ISPs implement a dampening cycle. when an ISP detects
that a site is slipping off the internet map continuously over a fixed
period of time, they stop advertising those routes for about 30 minutes.
we'll provide a follow-up once the interface is replaced in the GSR.

short update:
at 12:45, Clyde Higashida left the CalREN2 NOC. if the freeway is as clear
as it was when he headed north, he should be back to the Central Plant
Machine room around 1:10pm.
as soon as the hardware arrives, we will replace it.
