From snaz at calit2.uci.edu Mon Apr 29 09:32:44 2019 From: snaz at calit2.uci.edu (Shelly Nazarenus) Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2019 16:32:44 +0000 Subject: [UCI-Calit2] SURF-IoT Call for Proposals Message-ID: To the UCI Faculty: Support for Summer Undergraduate Researchers is Available As we live, work, and play in a hyperconnected world, Internet of Things (IOT) promises multi-trillion dollars economic growth by 2020. The IOT also serves as an academic research platform for innovating applications, inventing technological solutions, and exploring its implications on policy making and citizen/government relationship. Promoting by IOT, we can imagine schools, colleges and universities that partner with the community to teach students using innovative interactive technologies, producing confident, enriched leaders of tomorrow. We can imagine modern cities and neighborhoods with smart, connected infrastructure that is efficient, sustainable, and transparent to the citizenry. And we can imagine people who are connected to each other and to our community in ways never dreamed of before. Calit2 and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) are offering you an opportunity to have undergraduate researchers assist you in a mentored project during the summer. The projects may be in any discipline, but they should have a substantial IoT component. The 'SURF-IoT' program (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Internet of Things) will provide several UCI students a $2,000 stipend each for 10 weeks of work on their projects. As in past years, the students will be expected to put in a full-time effort. The SURF-IoT program only provides the student's stipend, so the proposed work should be one for which you can provide any other needed expenses. You will be expected to provide mentoring for the students and will be encouraged to present a lunchtime seminar about your work to the group of students. We invite you to submit proposals for projects. In past years most of the proposals have been accepted for presentation to the student applicants. Students will be matched to projects based on their transcripts, personal essays, the available funding, and your review of their applications. Each project proposal should contain the following: a) Project Title b) Project Description: A summary of one or two paragraphs about the research questions or innovative applications being addressed or the goals of the creative activity. The project should involve a substantial IoT component, and preference will be given to interdisciplinary projects. As part of the faculty member's ongoing larger efforts, the project might (for example) be to investigate a special sub-topic of IoT implications on security and privacy or to develop new sensors for data collection. c) Student's Involvement and Expected Outcomes: Indicate the kinds of activities intended for the student, the expected project outcomes, and specific skills that the student will develop as a result. The student should be engaged in solving a research question, not merely providing labor assistance. d) Student Eligibility: You may specify preferences or requirements for the student's prior coursework or special skills. Preference is usually given to students who have junior or senior standing, but that is not a strict requirement. Students expecting to graduate in June or September 2018 will receive low priority. There is no minimum GPA standard, although GPA will be a factor in the selection process. e) Recommended Readings: Please provide a list of reference materials students may review to learn about the topic and the proposed activities. Please submit your project proposals by Monday, May 6th to Brittany Gray, Program Coordinator, by e-mail: grayb at uci.edu. She may also be contacted at 824-8187. If you already have a student working for you, you may submit a proposal for SURF-IoT and encourage the student to apply. Selection of that student for the project is likely, but not guaranteed. Such faculty-student teams should also apply to the other summer program offered by UROP, called SURP. While a student is not allowed to win both awards, you can win SURP and SURF-IoT for different students, so submitting both applications will improve your chances. The UROP web site (www.urop.uci.edu) has further information. Additional information about the SURF-IoT program is attached. Thank you for your efforts and support. Feel free to contact Brittany or either of us if you have further questions. Information about previous SURF-IT students and projects may be found on the UROP and Calit2 web sites. G.P. Li Said M.
