Calit2 is in the process of developing a team to respond to a soon to be released FOA from the Department of Energy to establish a "Clean Manufacturing Innovation Institute on Smart Manufacturing: Advanced Sensors, Controls, Platforms and Modeling for Manufacturing." See synopsis below and attached Notice of Intent.

MEETING DATE: Friday, Jan. 23, 2015
MEETING TIME: 12:30 pm - 2 pm
MEETING LOCATION: Calit2 Building Conference Room 4318
Please RSVP to Aileen Broccardo (arbrocca at calit2.uci.edu<mailto:arbrocca at calit2.uci.edu>) light refreshments will be available for the meeting.

We invite you to meet to scope the proposal and to gauge interest in participating in this opportunity. We have been doing some preliminary planning and have identified some strategic advantages that will position us well for this competition:

*                  A head start on planning with respect to the work being done at Calit2, Center for Embedded Cyber-Physical Systems and other departments regarding the "Internet of Things"(IoT), which is clearly a technical focus (though not explicitly mentioned) of the Notice of intent;
*                  A head start on planning with respect to Sustainable Manufacturing with our proposed partnership with Michigan Tech, which is also a clear technical focus (though, as with IoT, not explicitly mentioned) of the Notice of Intent;
*                  A head start on planning with respect to Technician Education via the expansive collaborative network of RapidTech;
*                  An effective existing business model for managing large-scale, user-oriented facilities and programs with Calit2;
*                  Deep understanding of the control and automation needs of industry through strategic partnerships with system integration companies who implement automation strategies at manufacturing facilities throughout the country;
* Deep understanding of control and automation needs of industry through potential strategic partnerships with core automation subsystems such as CNC milling/turning, Robotic Welding, chemical processing, injection molding and others.

Department of Energy-led Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute
A third of the nation's energy consumption goes into manufacturing. New smart manufacturing technologies - including advanced sensors and sophisticated process controls - can dramatically improve energy efficiency in manufacturing, saving manufacturers costs and conserving the nation's energy. The Department of Energy will lead a competition for a new public-private manufacturing innovation institute focused on smart manufacturing, including advanced sensors, control, platforms, and models for manufacturing. By combining manufacturing, digital, and energy efficiency expertise, technologies developed by the institute will give American manufacturers unprecedented, real-time control of energy use across factories and companies to increase productivity and save on energy costs. For energy intensive industries - like chemical production, solar cell manufacturing, and steelmaking - these technologies can shave 10-20% off the cost of production. The new institute will receive a federal investment of $70 million that will be matched by at least $70 million in private investments and represents a critical step in the Administration's effort to double U.S. energy efficiency by 2030.
