Title: Verisign Labs and Measurement of the Leakage of .Onion at the Root

Time: 11 a.m.-noon

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014

Location: Donald Bren Hall, Room 3011, UC Irvine

Speaker: Allison Mankin, director, Verisign Labs

Abstract: Mankin will briefly overview Verisign Labs, which she directs, and then introduce a short talk by Aziz Mohaisen (a researcher at Verisign Labs) that highlights a good example of Verisign Labs research. This study presents the state of .onion requests received at the global public DNS A and J root nodes, and a complementary measurement from the DITL (day in the life of the Internet) data repository. It also presents potential explanations of the leakage and highlights trends associated with global censorship events. The .onion research was first presented at the 7th Workshop on Hot Topics in Privacy Enhancing Technologies.

Bio: Before becoming director of Verisign Labs, Mankin was program director in the Computer and Network Systems Division at the National Science Foundation, co-directing the Future Internet Design (FIND) program among others. She has conducted and led research on Internet infrastructure, transport and security topics since the mid-80s, making contributions to DNS security, Internet multimedia, congestion control and IPv6 design. She's been active in the IETF since its start, including 10 years serving in the IETF leadership as transport area director 1993-1997, transport area director 2000-2006 and IP Next-Generation area director 1993-1995. She is perhaps best known for leadership of the IETF's process for selecting IP Next Generation that led to IPv6. She served as the 2013-2014 nominating committee chair for IETF.
