Calit2 announces the first seminar in the program for Summer
Undergraduate Fellowships in Information Technology (SURF-IT). The
seminar series, on most Tuesdays at lunch time, is open to the public.

"Ubiquitous Computing and Educational Environments"

Dr. Gillian R. Hayes

Department of Informatics

Bren School of Information and Computer Science

Room 3008, Calit2 Building

Tuesday, June 28

A light lunch will be available at 11:45 AM; the seminar will begin at
noon.

The physical built environment in educational settings has profound
implications for learning. Furthermore, advanced computational
technologies now exist with the potential to create a truly interactive
and dynamic educational environment. Yet, many technologies for
learning are simply business or home computers re-appropriated for
classroom use. In this talk, I will describe alternative embedded and
ubiquitous computational environments in both formal and informal
learning environments. I will describe three case studies: using
interactive and collaborative visual supports in special education,
designing ubicomp technologies for reflection and sharing in elementary
schools, and teaching children about technology in informal learning
environments. These examples are focused on teaching specific
populations but demonstrate some of the potential for true integration
of technology into curriculum design and schooling for all populations.

Gillian R. Hayes is an Assistant Professor in the Donald Bren School of
Information and Computer Sciences, where she directs the Social and
Technological Action Research Group. Her research interests are in
human-computer interaction, specifically in the areas of ubiquitous
computing, computer supported cooperative work, and educational and
assistive technologies. Dr. Hayes also holds a courtesy appointment
with the Department of Education; and she is affiliated with the Center
for Ethnography, CalIT2, the Center for Biomedical Informatics, and the
Laboratory for Ubiquitous Computing and Interaction. She received her
B.S. in mathematics and computer science from Vanderbilt University and
her Ph.D. in computer science, with an emphasis on human-computer
interaction, from the Georgia Institute of Technology. More information

The SURF-IT Fellow doing research with Dr. Hayes for the summer is
Rachel Ulgado, an Anthropology major.
