TITLE: Vehicular Cyber-Physical Systems

ABSTRACT:
Road transportation is a "grand challenge" societal problem.  With close
to a billion vehicles on the road today, and a doubling projected over
the next 15-20 years, we face pressing challenges to the efficiency and
the safety of this infrastructure.  Over the past few years, the CarTel
project has combined mobile computing and sensing, wireless networking,
and data-intensive algorithms running on servers in the cloud to address
these challenges.  I will describe systems that can reduce travel times
and fuel with traffic-aware routing, improve safety by detecting road
hazards, and change driving behavior using privacy-preserving tolling
and insurance, among other things.

BIO:
Hari Balakrishnan is a Professor of Computer Science at MIT and an
alumnus of IIT Madras and UC Berkeley.  His research is in networked
computer systems.  His current interests are in system software and
network protocols for a world of "truly mobile" connected devices. Past
work includes the RON overlay network, the Chord DHT and its
applications, the Cricket location system, contributions to Internet
architecture and security, wireless protocols, and stream data
processing.  He is a Fellow of the ACM, a Sloan Fellow, an ACM
dissertation award winner, and has won several best-paper awards
including the IEEE Bennett paper prize.  He is also a co-founder of
StreamBase Systems.
