[UCI-Calit2] Establishing Recharge Service for New Piece of Equipment in Calit2 Building

Dear Colleagues:

 

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of a new piece of
equipment installed in Calit2 and available to the entire community
through a recharge system.

 

The instrument is a brand new, state-of-the-art Micro-Systems Analyzer
(Polytec MSA-500) - brochure attached.

 

This fully integrated Structural Dynamics and Surface Metrology System
allows quantitative three-dimensional measurements of the topology and
vibration modes of structures and devices ranging from centimeter down
to nanometer scale, including micro and nano-electromechanical systems
(MEMS/NEMS), micro-fluids and biological systems.

 

In simple terms, this instrument focuses one beam of laser light on a
spot in the sample to accurately track the position and velocity of that
point. The entire surface of the sample can be scanned, with
unprecedented speed and resolution. Finally, the accompanying software
collects and elaborates the information. Three main quantities can then
be accurately measured:

1. Surface topography (i.e. z-coordinate of each point in a surface)
with sub-nanometer resolution.

2. In-plane deformation and vibration modes, with nanometer amplitude
resolutions and at frequencies up to 1MHz.

3. Out-of-plane deformation and vibration modes, with picometer
amplitude resolutions and at frequencies up to 24MHz (extendable to
600MHz with an optional add-on (not included)).

 

The equipment is already installed in Calit2 and staffed with Calit2
personnel and a student super-user. Training is available to interested
users. Please email Kivanc Azgin (kazgin at uci.edu) and/or Jian-Guo Zheng
(jzheng at calit2.uci.edu) to schedule training.

 

The proposal rates are as follows:

 

                                 Internal Users (UCI and other academic)
External Users (Industry)

Equipment use                 $35 per hour
$75 per hour

Training              $120 per session per person
$360 per session per person

prospective users to best set up the recharge system.
