"DOING RESEARCH WITH HUMAN SUBJECTS"

Karen Allen

Director, Human Research Protections

Office of Research Administration

This SURF-IT seminar will provide an overview of the issues that are
important when considering research on human subjects. Based on a
history of research projects that were deemed unethical, and modified by
years of interaction with researchers, federal regulations now present a
set of concepts, categories, and procedures that universities follow
when reviewing research on human subjects. What activities are
considered research on human subjects? What are the different levels of
review? What are the underlying principles? At UCI as elsewhere, a
committee called the Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews individual
research proposals in the light of those general guidelines.

A light lunch will be available at 11:45 AM; the seminar will begin at
12:00.

SURF-IT is cosponsored by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Office.
