YOU ARE INVITED TO THE FIRST EVENT IN THE 'SURF-IT' SEMINAR SERIES
Tuesday, July 7
Calit2 Building, Room 3008
11:30 AM -- A light lunch will be available.
Two seminar presentations will follow.
12:00 noon
"ENHANCING SOCIAL SKILLS THROUGH VIDEO GAME ENCOUNTERS"
Prof. Liane Brouillette, Education
Undergraduate Researcher: Sunhee Baik
The SURF-IT seminar will provide an overview of recent research carried
out by the Center for Learning through the Arts and Technology. A key
component will be a video game designed for young children, which
features decision-points where children choose an action and then see
the consequences that follow on their choice. This is part of a broader
research agenda that looks at the use of drama, storytelling, and music
to heighten children's awareness of others' needs and viewpoints. In
middle school, an arts-based approach is used to introduce children to
diverse cultural traditions.
Dr. Brouillette holds a Ph.D. in the Social Foundations of Education
from the University of Colorado and a B.A. in Philosophy from Rice
University. Her interests include school reform and the distinctive
nature of learning in the arts and humanities. At Calit2 she is the
Principal Investigator of a state-funded grant on teacher professional
development.
12:30 PM
"UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AT UCI"
Said Shokair
Director, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Office
Co-Director, SURF-IT Fellowship Program
This seminar will describe the many programs at UCI for supporting
undergraduate research and how those may be accessed by SURF-IT Fellows.
It will also emphasize the opportunities that can be gained, and the
responsibilities that can be learned, from doing research as part of an
undergraduate education.
Said Shokair is a UCI engineering alumnus (Electrical Engineering,
1990). He has served at UCI in many capacities, beginning as a teaching
assistant in mathematics, and later as director of the Energy Scholars
program. He became the founding director of UROP in 1995. In that role
he has been the initiator, staff director, or PI of several campus
programs, including the undergraduate research symposium, the
undergraduate research journal, major NSF grants for undergraduate
research, and regional conferences on undergraduate research.
This seminar is free and open to the public.
"SURF-IT" is the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information
