SEMINAR SERIES

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Calit2 Building, Room 3008

This event is the second in the series of seminars presented as part of
the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information Technology
("SURF-IT"). This event will feature two of the program's faculty
mentors, representing different disciplines. The series is intended to
introduce the SURF-IT students and the general audience to a wide range
of interesting concepts and projects related to IT.

A light lunch will be available at 11:30 AM; the seminars will begin at
12:00.

"EXTREMELY LARGE TILED DISPLAYS: 3D, ANIMATION, AND RELATED PROBLEMS"

Prof. Stephen Jenks, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Undergraduate Researchers: Alex Kindel, Ilya Sukharnov

Viewing and manipulating 3D objects or animation on extremely high
resolution large tiled displays would be useful to many disciplines,
including the biomedical sciences, civil engineering, climate modeling,
and of course entertainment. However, it is still a new art, facing the
significant challenge of distributing huge datasets, detailed drawings,
or visualization algorithms across the many display computers that make
up the tiled display -- without incurring losses to latency and
compression/decompression. This summer's SURF-IT research projects are
addressing some of those issues, using Calit2's HiPerWall 200-megapixel
display.

--- Dr. Jenks received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from the
University of Southern California in 2000. Prior to that, he received a
B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering from Carnegie
Mellon. While earning his Ph.D., he worked at Northrop Grumman
Corporation. In 2001 Dr. Jenks joined the faculty at UCI.

"HUMAN-CENTERED COMPUTING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND POLITICAL
AWARENESS"

            Prof. Bill Tomlinson, Informatics

Undergraduate Researchers: Michael Riccobono, Robert Simpson, Jordan
Sinclair, Andrew Zaldivar

Our research encompasses many forms of networked human-computer
interaction, with particular attention to how networks and computers can
be used to achieve prosocial goals. The tools include Web 2.0,
animation, multiple-device environments, and computational analysis of
texts. This summer's SURF-IT projects focus on the use of IT for
environmental sustainability, automating the identification of metaphors
in political blogs, and reducing redundancy among collocated devices.

--- Dr. Tomlinson has been on the faculty at UCI since 2003. He earned
an undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard and a doctorate in Media
Arts and Sciences from MIT.
