10 a.m. Presentation, Calit2 Auditorium

Shaffar will share his perspectives on business, technical and social
challenges in knowledge management (KM), derived from his decade of
experience establishing and leading Northrop Grumman Corp.'s
comprehensive KM program. An overview of the current solutions applied
across Northrop Grumman will be provided. The discussion will include
technology adoption, impacts of multi-generational workforces, shifting
from managing co-located teams to virtual teams, the impacts of physical
workspaces on teams and the impacts of the growth in electronic content
within large corporations.

Shaffar is Northrop Grumman's director for knowledge management,
planning, scheduling and integration. He established the company's
knowledge management initiative in 1997 on the B-2 bomber program and
that initiative later grew into a corporate-wide effort. Recent
corporate-wide solutions include a common collaboration and document
management system and a new internal search solution. Shaffar is the
founding member of Northrop Grumman's Corporate Knowledge Management
Steering Team and is also a member of the company's Strategic
Information Technology Governance Council. He has a B.S in aerospace
engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and an
M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from UC Irvine.
His accomplishments in knowledge management have been recognized in the
Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, Aviation Week & Space Technology,
Knowledge Management Magazine, PC Magazine, Information Week, Business
2.0, and CIO Magazine. He has also been featured on the Association of
Knowledgework STAR Series.
