Kulkarni's abstract: We consider the problem of minimizing the transmit
power of handheld communication devices for the application of reliable
and time-critical dissemination of patient information over wireless
channels in healthcare. Using Lagrangian relaxation, we obtain
decentralized primal and dual transmit power control algorithms, and
establish the input-output stability of the network using multipliers
and passivity framework. Specifically, we show how multipliers can be
used to ensure the bounded-input bounded-output stability and robust
performance in the face of actuator saturations, time-varying channel
gains, and time-delays. Next, we consider the problem of analyzing this
data at the server end, and develop $H_{\infty}$ and model predictive
controllers to flag event handlers and to administer the precise amount
of drugs at the precise instants in the face of modeling uncertainties
and sensor noise. We will present several applications and our
deployment case studies.

Bio: Kulkarni is the president of Sentina Systems Ltd. and a visiting
assistant professor in the electrical engineering department at Indian
Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical
engineering from the University of Southern California in 2001. He was a
postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
2001-03 and at University of Colorado, Boulder, 2004-05.

He is the author of "Qualitative Nonlinear Dynamics of Communication
Networks," a research monograph under preparation for Birkhauser Boston.
