UC Irvine is collaborating with three other partners to enter a
remote-controlled vehicle in this year's DARPA Urban Challenge. The UCI
component, SciAutonics, is working with Auburn University, ESRI (a
geographic information systems and mapping software company) and an
Austrian research center, all of which have different areas of
expertise. Team SciAutonics/Auburn Engineering's Ford Explorer has been
named a semifinalist and accepted into the national qualifying event in
Victorville, Calif. October 25-31, and if it qualifies, it will advance
to the Urban Challenge on Nov. 3.

John Porter, UCI's team coordinator, is looking for volunteer help on
the car's navigation and sensor integration systems. Opportunities
include:

1.	Integrating the Ibeo 3D laser rangefinder (LIDAR) into the car.
Porter says this could be the vehicle's most important sensor;
2.	Work on automatically generating 3-point turns;
3.	Work on automatically generating curved turns (car currently
uses straight-line segments). Requires C/C++ implementation and one team
member has developed partial ports that could be used as a starting
point;
4.	Fix software so that re-starts are fast;
5.	Create tool to convert between clock time (3:37 p.m. on Tuesday)
and vehicle Linux time (1183025678.123456).

Porter says the team's software is modular, so adding new sensors and
other capabilities is straightforward.
