SEMINAR

Traffic Surveillance with Wireless Magnetic Sensors

Dr. Sinem Coleri Ergen*
Postdoc, University of California, Berkeley

THURSDAY, Jan. 19, 2006

4-5 p.m.

Calit2 Building, Room 3008

Wireless magnetic sensor networks offer a very attractive alternative to
inductive loops for traffic measurement in freeways and at intersections
in terms of cost, ease of deployment and maintenance, and enhanced
measurement capabilities. The network consists of two parts: wireless
magnetic sensor nodes and an access point. Traffic measurements are
generated at the sensor nodes and transferred to the access point over
radio. Designing such a system requires both processing magnetic sensor
data to analyze, evaluate and predict transportation system behavior and
understanding wireless communications to achieve sensor network
requirements.

The first part of the talk focuses on vehicle detection capability of
magnetic sensors. We show that sensor nodes provide vehicle detection
and speed estimation accuracy above 98 percent. Moreover, the high
spatial density associated with these sensors allows us to classify the
vehicles and even re-identify them. The second part of the talk explains
the communication protocol design to satisfy the requirements of
wireless sensor systems. The main design constraints of wireless sensors
are energy efficiency, delay guarantee and fault tolerance. We show how
to satisfy these constraints by using application-specific
characteristics of transportation systems in multiple protocol layers.
Future work on the effective use of wireless communication technology in
transportation systems is outlined at the end of the talk.

* Dr. Ergen is a candidate for the Calit2 transportation engineering
faculty position in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
