Title: The Hybrid Media Lecture Series Presents "Sound, Politics and Burlesque Mechanics"

Speaker: Peter Sinclair, Professor of Sound and Digital Media, Aix en Provence College of Arts, France

Date: Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004

Time: 4 p.m.

Location: Humanities Instructional Building 135, UC Irvine

Abstract: Peter Sinclair will discuss his interactive sound performance and installation work. Coming from a sculptural background with no official

training in music or technology, Sinclair has nonetheless incorporated electronic sounds and interactive behavioral systems into his work. Humor and absurdity, as well as computer-to-computer interaction have been driving forces in his artistic development.

Bio: Sinclair is known for his sound installations and other transdisciplinary works which use sound as their principal medium. Excited

by technology, but approaching it with critical irony, Sinclair's work has moved from burlesque mechanics through the ill treatment of computers to performances that parody modern media language in trans-Atlantic streamed collaborations. Aside from his personal production, Sinclair participates in various artists' collectives and has been working with New York-based artist G.H. Hovagimyan since 1996. Sinclair, who heads the sound department at Aix en Provence's College of Arts, is co-director of Jerome Joy of Locus Sonus, a post-graduate sound laboratory, and is a member of the French ministry for culture's fine arts scientific council.

The Hybrid Media Lecture Series is organized by the Art, Computation, Engineering (ACE) Graduate Program at UCI, in collaboration with the Media Arts Layer of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [ Cal-(IT)2].
