Abstract: Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are optical fibers that have no dedicated cores, but have regularly spaced air holes running along their length. PCFs have drawn great attention because of their novel optical properties, such as wide-range single-mode operation, tailorable group velocity dispersion and extremely large- or small-mode field diameters. PCFs have shown great potential for nonlinear device applications and for wideband transmission in ultra-fast next-generation communication systems. In addition, the number of applications for PCFs in the medical imaging field is expanding rapidly. This presentation will highlight the basic properties of PCFs, as well as their numerical modeling, basic devices for utilizing them and their applications.

Bio: Jinchae Kim received his bachelor's degree in physics from Chungnam National University in Korea in 1998. He earned his master's degree in 2000 in information and communications from the Gwangju Institiute of Science and Technology in Korea, and currently is pursuing his doctorate degree in information and communications from the same institute. He is a visiting scholar at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he is working with Professor Curtis R. Menyuk on the mode and coupled mode analysis of photonic crystal fibers. Kim also designs and fabricates PCFs.

This event is free and open to the public.
