Abstract: In the field of distributed real-time computing two trends
can be observed. One trend is a tendency to use COTS devices, as for
example, Ethernet communication controllers to take advantage of the
economy of scale of the semiconductor industry. The other trend is to
deploy time-triggered real-time computing systems for the implementation
of safety critical control applications such as in the automotive and
aerospace domain.=20

=20

In a recent research project, time-triggered technology was implemented
on top of a standard gigabit Ethernet to determine the possibilities and
limitations of using Ethernet as the communication system within the
time-triggered architecture. Based on the results of this project,
researchers are developing a novel Ethernet switch that will support
both standard Ethernet messages and time-triggered Ethernet messages.

=20

This seminar will start with discussing the challenges that must be
tackled in the design of a safety-critical real-time system and will
present the design of an Ethernet switch that can handle both legacy
event-triggered Ethernet applications and time-triggered safety critical
control applications.=20

Speaker: Dr. Hermann Kopetz is professor for Real-Time Systems at the
Technical University of Vienna. Dr. Kopetz's research interests focus at
the intersection of real-time systems, fault-tolerant systems and
distributed embedded systems. He is the chief architect of the
Time-Triggered Architecture which evolved over the past twenty years of
research. From 1990 to 1992, he was chairman of the IEEE Technical
Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing and was elected "Fellow of the
IEEE" in 1993. Dr. Kopetz served as chairman of the IFIP WG 10.4 on
Dependable Computing and Fault-Tolerance from 1996 to 1998. =20

=20

In 1998, Dr. Kopetz was elected to become a full member of the Austrian
Academy of Science. Two years later he was nominated to become one of
eight scientists to advise the Austrian Government on Science Policy.
Dr Kopetz has published a widely used textbook on real-time embedded
systems and more than 100 papers on the topic of embedded systems. He
holds more than twenty patents in the area of dependable real-time
systems.
