NSF FUNDS UCI ENGINEERING PROFESSOR TO DEVELOP NEW CIRCUIT DESIGN =
TECHNIQUES FOR BROADBAND COMMUNICATIONS
Jazz Semiconductor Donates Fabrication of Test Chips


Irvine, Calif., August 19, 2003 - Professor Michael Green, associate =
chair of the department of electrical engineering and computer science =
in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and affiliated with the =
California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, =
at the University of California, Irvine, has received a $270,000 =
National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop new ways of =
optimizing the performance of existing broadband networking technologies =
based on CMOS circuit design. =20


"We believe these funds will allow us to develop ways to squeeze more =
performance out of existing broadband technologies and to help build =
upon infrastructure for wired communications networking over wide =
areas," said Green.  "By combining circuits in novel ways, the synergy =
will push the transmission speeds without losing the integrity of the =
signal." =20

With the NSF funds, combined with local industry support, Green will be =
able to enlist graduate students to assist with his research.  His team =
will work closely with local semiconductor manufacturer, Jazz =
Semiconductor, a pure play wafer foundry with a leadership position in =
mixed signal and RF processes.  Jazz, headquartered in Newport Beach, =
will donate the fabrication of its advanced Silicon Germanium BiCMOS =
devices.   These test chips for Green's project are valued at =
approximately $500, 000 annually. =20
