Dear all,

I would like to draw your attention to the project Χώρα Σε Βλέπω: Ο 20ος αιώνας το Ελληνικού Σινεμά /Motherland, I See You: The 20th Century of Greek Cinema, a multi-use resource for teaching and learning about and with Greek films that were made in every decade of the twentieth century. The project is a multi-institutional effort conceived and coordinated by the Hellenic Film Academy with the key sponsorship of the National Centre of Audiovisual Media & Communication and the support of multiple public and private organizations involved in the preservation and valorization of Greece’s film heritage (see link below).

It is a two-track project that provides: 1) access to digitally restored and newly subtitled landmark films (better- or lesser-known) of all genres—fiction, non-fiction and experimental—curated by Elina Psykou and Syllas Tzoumerkas; and 2) a bi-lingual companion (Greek-English, in two volumes) of educational material in the form of short essays and visuals curated by Afroditi Nikolaidou and Dimitris Papanikolaou (Nefeli Editions, 2022). The restored films are travelling in Greek and overseas festivals and special events wherever they are welcome. Each essay in the collection is anchored on a particular date which serves as an open-ended departure point for exploring new topics in or around Greek film studies or for reframing older topics. Some examples: film and disability activism; women filmmakers and film critics; straight-to-VHS production; festivals, anti-festivals, cinephilia, and film journals; film historiography and periodization; LGBTQ+ filmmaking; exhibition sound technologies; genre theory; immigration and political exile; political violence and Cold War authoritarianism on film—to name just a few. The essays resonate with each other in various ways.

The goal of the project team and supporting institutions is to keep enriching the pool of AV and other resources and to incorporate them in an online multimedia platform that can be hosted by academic libraries internationally.

Please consider supporting the project in its current and future stages.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I have contributed an essay in the collection.)
