Seminar on Modern Greek Studies
African American Travelers Encounter Greece, ca. 1850-1900 (online event; see registration details below)
John Lee, University of California Santa Barbara

While historians have examined nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American trans-Atlantic travel, they have emphasized western Europe and sometimes Egypt, while neglecting Greece. This talk examines the experiences of three Black Americans who went to Greece in the last half of the nineteenth century: David Dorr, who as an enslaved servant visited Syros (Syra) and Athens in May 1852; Frederick Douglass, who spent a week in Athens during March 1887; and John Wesley Gilbert, who spent 1890-91 in Greece as the first African American member of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Thursday, April 7, 4pm
