Dr. Merih Erol.

A Historian’s Gaze into the Musical Debates of the Greek Orthodox in
Nineteenth-century Istanbul
Merih Erol, Özyeğin University

In this lecture, Dr. Erol will discuss the relationship between liturgical
music and class identity, and the role of music in national identity
formation by focusing on the Greek Orthodox community in late Ottoman
Istanbul. She will investigate the discourse on music and the debates about
the pending liturgical music reform among Greek Orthodox musicians and the
educated elite at a time of remarkable social and economic change.
