Battling against Fake News in Britain and Greece: can the mainstream media win
Tuesday 9 November, 18:00- 19:30 (UK time)

The challenge of ‘fake’ news, whether from social media or in more mainstream news sources, is a cause for concern in Britain and Greece, as well as internationally. It feeds on declining levels of trust in politics, the disparaging of expertise, and populist revolts – which provide scope for seemingly fanciful news stories. How can responsible mainstream media respond effectively to the spread of fake news? Is it a battle that can only be won by deeper socio-economic shifts occurring? Here we compare the cases of Britain and Greece and look for the wider lessons to be learnt.

Entrepreneurialising Solidarity? A Pragmatic Sociology of the Social and Solidarity Economy in Greece
Tuesday 16 November, 16:00- 17:30 (UK time)

Against the backdrop of austerity and COVID-19, the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) sector is viewed as central by policy-makers to address the precarising impacts of these crises on society. On the one hand, scholars have illuminated the ways in which the SSE can alleviate state and market failures. On the other hand, radical scholarship has pointed to the ways in which the SSE actors can transform the means of production and distribution altogether. Less attention has been paid to the epistemic consequences of fusing market-derived principles with conceptions of ‘the social’ and ‘solidarity' in the SSE. In this seminar, Dimitris Soudias will present key findings to this regard, by delineating the ‘making of’ the Social and Solidarity Economy in Greece under SYRIZA.

Speaker: Dimitris Soudias, Hellenic Bank Association Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Chair: Vassilis Monastiriotis, Associate Professor of Political Economy at the European Institute, LSE

Cyprus and Stability in the Eastern Mediterranean
Tuesday 30 November, 18:00-19:30 (UK time)

Cyprus has long been seen as strategically important, located as it is at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Today, there are fresh challenges: how to manage the hydrocarbon reserves found off its coastline; cooperating with moderate governments in the neighbourhood to promote stability and security; and, working with international allies in order to respond to terrorism and organised crime in the region. In this talk, Alexandros Zenon will review the strategic challenges Cyprus faces in the future and the opportunities to address them effectively.

Speaker: Ambassador Alexandros N. Zenon, f. High Commissioner of Cyprus to the UK

Discussant: Emmanuel Karagiannis, Reader in International Security, King’s College London

Chair: Kevin Featherstone, Hellenic Observatory Director
