*ODYSSEUS ELYTIS ENDOWED VISITING PROFESSOR OF MODERN HELLENIC STUDIES*

*ANNOUNCEMENT*

*RECRUITMENT PERIOD*

Open from April 26, 2021 through May 31, 2021.

*POSITION DESCRIPTION*

The Modern Greek Studies Program at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New
Jersey invites applications for a spring semester position as the Odysseus
Elytis Endowed Visiting Professor of Modern Hellenic Studies, for the
period January 17-May 14, 2022. This appointment is non-tenure track and
is initially for one spring semester, with possibility for renewal on the
same terms for a subsequent two to three year period.

Inasmuch as this is a visiting position, we ideally seek an established
scholar, regularly appointed in Modern Greek Studies at another academic
institution, who would find a flexible short term association with our
program, in teaching and program development, an engaging collaboration.
More specifically, the successful applicant must have a native or
near-native facility in Modern Greek; hold a Ph.D. in some significant
field of Modern Greek Studies (e.g., literature, history, anthropology,
religion, sociology, political science, arts, gender and cultural studies);
and show evidence of scholarly achievement and successful teaching
experience at the undergraduate level. The time frame of specialization
must be post 1500 A.D./C.E. Especially encouraged to apply are candidates
specializing in literature, who can link the dynamics and themes of
Hellenic civilization from antiquity into the modern period.

The successful candidate will teach one undergraduate level course in her
or his disciplinary area, pitching it widely to engage not only program
minors, but the broader student population and interested auditors from the
local Greek-American community. The format for the course is negotiable,
depending on the candidate’s whereabouts in spring 2022 and the global
health situation. That is to say, it might be deployed conventionally on
campus, “face-to-face,” or alternatively in online hybrid format, using the
Canvas Learning Management System. In the latter case, the appointee need
not be resident on campus throughout the entire spring semester of the
appointment. He or she will, however, be expected to be in residence and
meet with registered students face-to-face (i.e., the “hybrid” component)
for a negotiated portion of the semester, on which see below.

In addition to innovative teaching, we seek a candidate who will creatively
collaborate with the Program Director and core faculty in strengthening and
expanding Modern Greek Studies at our university. To that end, in addition
to undergraduate teaching excellence, the successful candidate will
demonstrate experience in evaluating a Modern Greek Studies Program design
and operations, networking with local support communities, and pursuing
relevant funding opportunities. In carrying out this component of the job
description, said candidate will coordinate with the Program Director
throughout the semester of appointment, and be available for on campus
interactions for at least four weeks, in March or April. These will
include meetings with students enrolled in the class, consultations with
program faculty, and organizing and presenting two or three public outreach
lectures, again pitched to broadly engage our interested clienteles.

*APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS *

The Search Committee will only consider complete applications, which must
include the following:
