A Byzantine Christmas is the Greek Institute and Psaltikon's annual holiday concert of traditional Greek sacred music, ‘kalanda’ (carols), and readings from the Christmas stories of Greek authors like Alexandros Papadiamantis. For the first time, the program will be presented at The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church in Somerville, MA, co-sponsored by the St. Catherine’s Philoptochos Society, and followed by a reception in the church hall. Two nights later, Psaltikon will return to the original home of this program, First Church in Cambridge, to sing the program for live and virtual audiences, broadcast by Musae.
The program is led by Dr. Spyridon Antonopoulos, early music scholar and director of the Psaltikon Ensemble. The choir will be joined by an ensemble of acclaimed early and world music experts, including Dimitra Kahrimanidi (laouto), Vasilis Peseridis (lyra), Mili Chang (flute), and George Lernis (percussion).
Tickets for Saturday's show available at www.psaltikon.org or call Diane Karavitis at (508)574-9862. For Monday's show, please visit Musae, which will also be livestreaming the event for virtual attendees. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door on both nights.
