The MGSA is pleased to announce the award of two Innovative Initiatives
Grants in its April 2021 cycle.

In Spring 2021, the MGSA Innovative Initiatives Committee awarded $1,000 as
support for a seed grant to *George I. Paganelis* (Curator, Tsakopoulos
Hellenic Collection) at *California State University, Sacramento*. The
grant, in conjunction with others, will support a digitization pilot
project of 23 rare and unique Greek American newspapers and journals held
by the Tsakopoulos Collection. These digitized texts will increase the
preservation of and create free worldwide access to an important group of
primary-source documents. When completed, the project will be one of the
few digitization projects in the United States focused on Greek American
resources and will serve as the basis for larger grant proposals by
California State University, Sacramento, in cooperation with members of the
Greek Digital Journal Archive (GDJA), a consortium of institutions in North
America and Europe.

While translations of texts are ordinarily not eligible for Innovative
Initiatives Grants, the Committee awarded $1,000 to *Tina Bucuvalas* (*Florida
Cultural Resources, Inc.*) for the translation of her edited volume, *Greek
Music in America*, because of the volume’s uniqueness. Published by the
University Press of Mississippi (2018) and winner of the 2019 Vasiliki
Karagiannaki Prize for Best Edited Volume in Modern Greek Studies, the book
addresses a range of issues and genres not found in other scholarship. Its
translation into Greek will vitally contribute to the transnational
discussion about musical culture, open this field of study to further
scholarship, and educate Greeks world-wide about the role that Greek
Americans and Greek American studies have played in the development of
Greek music.

Congratulations to our colleagues!

The next deadline is October* 1, 2021.*
