Greece and its New Geopolitical Challenges: which way forward?

With changes in the European Union, uncertainties in the Atlantic Alliance, opportunities and threats in the eastern Mediterranean, and instability in the Middle East, Greece currently faces a challenging external environment. How should it respond? How can it best promote its interests and overcome constraints? What can its partners expect from Greece? What does Greece require of them? Professor Kevin Featherstone will be in conversation with Nikos Dendias, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, to explore Greece’s strategy in this new and complex phase of foreign policy.

Is Greece Falling Behind in the E-Economy? What is to be Done?

The panel will draw on data from the latest wave of the World Internet Survey to discuss a number of issues. It will consider how well Greece has responded to international developments in the digital economy in recent years and discuss the strategic priorities for it to do better in the future.

A New Economic Plan for Greece: what future?

Monday 16 November, 16:00-17:30 (UK Time)

Greece has come through a major debt crisis, with austerity imposed by its ‘bailout’ programmes. It now has to manage the COVID-19 impact. So, what now? How can it chart a way forward to a stronger economic future. The committee chaired by Professor Sir Christopher Pissarides was tasked by the PM with developing a plan for sustainable economic growth in Greece. Here, Professor Pissarides will outline the main elements of the plan and Louka Katseli and Michael Haliassos will give their comments.

The 3rd Greek bailout: lessons to be learnt?

 

Wednesday 25 November 2020, 16.00-17.30 UK Time (18.00-19.30 GR Time)

Joaquín Almunia led an independent evaluation report of the EU’s financial rescue of Greece (2015-18) and the report was published this summer. We will discuss the successes – stabilising the euro-zone and Greece’s public finances – as well as the consequences (falls in investment, a major rise in unemployment, and a massive brain-drain). What are the lessons for the euro-zone? For Greece’s recovery?
