A New Economic Plan for Greece: what future?
Monday 16 November, 16:00-17:30 (UK Time)
Greece has come through a major debt crisis, with austerity imposed by its ‘bailout’ programmes. It now has to manage the COVID-19 impact. So, what now? How can it chart a way forward to a stronger economic future. The committee chaired by Professor Sir Christopher Pissarides was tasked by the PM with developing a plan for sustainable economic growth in Greece. Here, Professor Pissarides will outline the main elements of the plan and Louka Katseli and Michael Haliassos will give their comments.

Speaker: Sir Christopher Pissarides, Regius Professor of Economics, LSE
Discussants: Michael Haliassos, Professor & Chair of Macroeconomics & Finance, Goethe University, Frankfurt
Louka T. Katseli, Professor Emeritus of International Economics & Development, National Kapodistrian University of Athens
Chair: Kevin Featherstone, Director, Hellenic Observatory

What are the lessons for the euro-zone? For Greece’s recovery?

Trust, Resilience and the Effectiveness of Government: lessons from the COVID crisis

Thursday, 3 December 2020, 18.30-20.00 (UK Time)/ 20.30-22.00 (GR Time)
Crises and wars have historically been drivers of political and economic change. Such moments create opportunities to reflect on the nature of the economic and political institutions in place and their capacities. This event will look at some emerging lessons of the COVID-19 crisis and directions of change and renewal. While the pandemic has unique features, many things that we have witnessed during the crisis reaffirm the importance of long-standing challenges that must be faced when building effective economies and polities.
Speaker: Sir Tim Besley, School Professor of Economics of Political Science; W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics, Department of Economics, LSE
Maria Petmesidou (DPhil Oxford University), Professor Emerita of Social Policy, Democritus University, Greece
