The US, European Defense, and Mark Twain's "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics"





Leo Michel '69 retired from the U.S. Government in 2015, after a 35-year career in the Department of Defense (Office of the Secretary of Defense and National Defense University's Institute for National Strategic Studies, INSS) and Central Intelligence Agency.  Mr. Michel previously served as a legislative aide on foreign affairs for a Member of Congress, reporter for French media, and U.S. Navy officer.  He holds a MA from Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies (1975) and a BA from Princeton University (Woodrow Wilson School, 1969.)  His research interests focus on NATO issues; U.S. defense relations with France, the United Kingdom, and the Nordic states; and the EU's Common Defense and Security Policy.  In addition to monographs and articles for FIIA, the Atlantic Council, and INSS, Mr. Michel's commentaries have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Defense News, Foreign Policy, Le Monde, and Revue Défense Nationale.  He was the lead author for "Strategic Deterrence, Nuclear Weapons, and Europe: New Challenges, New Approaches," published by FIIA in September 2019.
