Dear MGSA members,

I am Violetta Hionidou, based at Newcastle University, UK. I have recently developed a website called 'Greek Family History (https://apps.ncl.ac.uk/GreekFamilyHistory/Page/Home)', a result of my long-term research on modern Greek Family History. The website features a database that allows you sift through 18th and 19th century nominal censuses from the Islands of Kythera (Cerigo), Mykonos and Syros. Those who have roots to those islands can retrace the steps of their Greek family members and piece together a part of their family history. If you would like to learn more about the general processes of how to reconstruct your or someone else's Greek Family History, and learn more about the materials available to do this, then start with the 'About' section of the website. I have also developed a small number of School lessons where the database is employed in the lessons. These can be found in the website under Education. These are currently in Greek but if there is interest I would be happy to translate them and make them available on the website. Both the website and the database can be used in teaching at all levels of the education system but also potentially for research purposes. Please feel free to use the material but also to disseminate to anyone you think might be interested.

If you want to keep updated on the project, then follow the Facebook Page called 'Greek Family History.' I would be eager to hear from you if you happen to find this website useful, or if you have any suggestions about how to improve it. Please let me know in the comments section of the website or feel free to contact me directly by email or via Facebook!

Many thanks,
Violetta
