Edward and Emily McWhinney Professorship in International Relations - Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

The Hellenic Studies Program at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor who will hold the inaugural 5-year renewable Edward and Emily McWhinney Professorship in International Relations starting September 2019.

Excellence in research and teaching are the primary criteria for this position. Candidates must have research expertise in comparative approaches to interstate relations and population movements with a focus on Greece, the Balkans, and the Eastern Mediterranean. The ideal candidate will have a successful record in their chosen specialization, be well regarded in their field, and should have already gained a significant reputation in academic circles. The chosen candidate must hold a PhD in either history, political science, sociology, international relations or a related area by the employment start date.

Duties will include research, teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and service to the program. Ability to teach outside the advertised disciplinary focus, notably in other specializations within the broader umbrella of Hellenic Studies (Byzantine, Ottoman, Balkan, and Modern Greek history), will be viewed positively.

The successful candidate will develop courses that effectively integrate their field of expertise into the curriculum and research profile of Hellenic Studies, as well as actively engage in and enrich the outreach activities of the program. The candidate should also have the ability to conduct research in Modern Greek. The selected candidate will also be responsible for organizing the annual McWhinney lecture.

SFU is an equity employer and encourages applications from all qualified individuals including women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, Indigenous Peoples, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of the university.

The application deadline is March 14, 2019. Applicants will submit electronically a cover letter, CV, statement of research interests, teaching philosophy and SIX academic letters of reference. Original letters of reference should be submitted by the referees directly to Dr. Robert Gordon, Chair of the Appointments Committee. Complete applications should be sent in pdf format to hellenic at sfu.ca<mailto:hellenic at sfu.ca>

Only those holding or those eligible to be promoted to the rank will be considered. The position is subject to availability of funding. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Under the authority of the University Act personal information that is required by the University for academic appointment competitions will be collected.
