Staging Greece at the 1939/40 World's Fair in New York

Tuesday, April 17, 2018 - 6:00pm
Room 024, Barker Center
Abstract

This seminar will explore the Greek pavilion at the 1939/40 World's Fair in New York with particular attention to how the Greek government staged the nation for an American audience. At first look, the Greek pavilion and its accompanying pamphlet stand out versus other countries' futuristic displays for their heavy incorporation of the past, including the exhibition of ancient works of art. However, the Greek pavilion was deeply contemporary in the ways that it incorporated Greek antiquity. This seminar, therefore, places the pavilion in its greater contemporary context, particularly in relation to Metaxas' ideology and current aesthetic trends in 1930s Greece, in order to better understand the choices made in its production.

Chair: Professor Panagiotis Roilos

Graduate co-ordinators: Ilana Freedman, Maria Zymara
