The very significant role of the Jews in the diverse musical culture of Greece has deep roots and is still felt in popular and art traditions. Following a brief general overview, Chris Williams provides an accessible introduction to some lesser-known aspects of the subject, with particular reference to Greece itself but also to the wider, interconnected musical world of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. The lecture will be accompanied by music and video from Greece, Turkey, Israel and New York.

Chris Williams’ doctoral thesis is a comparative study of George Seferis and T. S. Eliot. He has explored the overlapping musical traditions of Greece and Turkey and has made a special study of the music of the Cretan Muslims. His present interest is the ethnography of Greek popular music in the twentieth century.

 No booking is required.
