ANNOUNCEMENT: Gavras' film Z on Oct. 19, 2017, 6:30 p.m., at the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts

Greek-born French film director *Costas Gavras’s* fast-paced political
thriller *Z *(1969; Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film, 1970) will
be screened at the *Boston Museum of Fine Arts* *on Thursday, October 19,
2017, 6:30 pm–9:30 pm,* as part of a retrospective (“Costa-Gavras:
Encounters With History”), curated by Professors John and Susan Michalczyk
of Boston College.

Still considered one of the world’s top 15 political films, *Z* became a
cult film in its times — in France (3-5 million tickets sold), USA,
world-wide, and Greece (when eventually permitted by political
circumstances). Its story line of political corruption, the assassination
of a Greek leftist deputy (Gregory Lambrakis) in Thessalonike, is set
against the subsequent backdrop of the military dictatorship instituted in
Greece on 21 April 1967.

Music: Mikis Theodorakis.

The screening will be followed by discussion.
