The lecture follows the links of the court of Nikolaos Mavrokordatos (Istanbul 1680 - Bucharest 1730) with the République des Lettres, the commercium litterarium, of the early 18th century. In order to historicize the conscience of Greek elites in the Ottoman Empire and thus assess and eventually revise the contradictory and often teleological classifications of the available research on this topic, it raises the question of Nikolaos Mavrocordatos’ self-fashioning, focuses on the Western European reception, translation and publishing history of his treatise On Duties, and discusses The Parerga of Philotheus, that is the philosophical novel of the prince, as the vanishing point of the three terms: Diplomacy, Humanist Fiction, and Diplomatic Poetics.

Miltos Pechlivanos is Professor of Modern Greek Studies and Director of the Centrum Modernes Griechenland (CeMoG) at the Freie Universität Berlin. He studied Modern Greek Studies and Comparative Literature at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at the University of Konstanz. In 1999 he defended his doctoral thesis on 'Discourses of Modernity Before the Foundation of the Greek State'. He has taught at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and, as a visiting professor, at the Universities of Munich, of Cyprus, and at the EHESS, Paris. His research interests include the theory and history of reading and literary communication, the history of knowledge and the reception of Enlightenment ideas in modern Greek culture, and the history of Greek-German cultural transfers.
