This special series of campus events will bring together musicians of Armenian, Turkish, and Balkan origins, to engage in a musical dialogue that emphasizes shared musical traditions. The concert and workshop will offer the broader Princeton community the unique opportunity to listen to, experience and familiarize themselves with a powerful music that combines Middle Eastern melodies with Western harmony and form. The musicians who will accompany Ara Dinkjian at the event are regarded as master instrumentalists in their own right, particularly of the kanun and clarinet.
Many different voices from the Princeton community are excited to participate in the organization of this event, including the Princeton Armenian Society, Orange Pan-Hellenic Association, and Turkish Graduate Student Association.
Co-sponsors: USG Events Board, Campus Conversations on Identities, GSG Events Board, Davis International Center, Graduate Turkish Student Association, and the Department of Anthropology, Lewis Center for the Arts

Documentary Film Screening: Garod (translated in English as "Longing") is a documentary film made by Princeton anthropology graduate student Onur Günay and ethnomusicologist Burcu Yıldız. The film portrays the lives and stories of two Armenian-American musicians-Onnik and Ara Dinkjian, a father-and-son pair-using their trip to Diyarbekir, the family's lost hometown, as the central narrative arc. Garod focuses on the remaking of a musical tradition and explores the ways in which the Armenian community in the United States coped with displacement, pain, and loss through music and art. In 2015, Garod became one of the films through which Armenian, Turkish, and Kurdish communities from Turkey, Armenia, Europe, Canada, and the United States commemorated the Armenian Genocide on its centenary, owing to its strong emphasis on hope and the life-making capacities of people in the wake of violent catastrophe. After the film screening, we will host a conversation with the filmmakers Onur Günay and Burcu Yıldız.

Sunday, March 12, 2017, 4:00 p.m.

Concert: There will be two parts to the Ara Dinkjian concert. The first part will feature the all-acoustic Secret Trio, while the second part will feature Ara accompanied by the New York Gypsy All-Stars. The program will consist mostly of Ara's own compositions, along with songs that are popular across the Balkans and Middle East.

Monday, March 13, 2017, 6:30 p.m.

Workshop: Ara Dinkjian will offer a presentation on the unique characteristics of Middle Eastern music, discussing odd time signatures, micro-tonal modes and the ancient instrumental features of this music.
