The Paideia Institute is happy to announce its fall semester offerings in
Telepaideia, our series of online courses in Latin and Ancient Greek.
Telepaideia allows you to study Latin and Greek language and literature
with expert teachers from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a
computer and an internet connection. Courses this fall include:

MODERN GREEK FOR CLASSICISTS

Course Description: A course designed for students who know Ancient Greek
and would like to learn the modern Greek language.
Level: This course is intended for beginners with knowledge of Ancient
Greek.
Textbook: Instructor will provide materials.
Schedule: Tuesdays at 2pm EST

Tuition: $200

MODERN GREEK READING COURSE: MODERN GREEK AESTHETICISM: GOD IN EXILE,
HOMEWARD BOUND

Course Description: This course focuses on the late 19th century Greek
Aesthetes. Like their British contemporaries (such as Oscar Wilde, who we
will also read in translation), the Aesthetes of Athens tried to
reformulate the idea of classicism into a radical ideal. The prose of
Episkopopoulos, Rodokanakis, and, above all, Giannopoulos transformed the
study of Classical Greece into a productive mode of art.
Level: This course is intended for those with some experience in Classical
and Modern Greek, though English translations will be provided.
Textbook: Instructor will provide materials.
Schedule: Thursdays at 2pm EST
Instructor: Ilias Kolokouris

Tuition: $200
Sections capped at: 5 students
MODERN GREEK READING COURSE: KATHAREVOUSA 1: LINGUISTIC PURIFICATION,
KORAIS PURGATORY

Course Description: This course focuses on the history of Katharevousa. A
language with a tendency towards catharsis, Katharevousa was introduced to
clean up the form of Greek spoken in the Greek peninsula. Following a
timespan from late 18th century and the "Dirty Language" that contained
Venetian, Turkish and Slavic words, we will read about the "middle path"
that Korais proposed, the extreme purists and the modest *Dialogue *written
by Dionisios Solomos. We will reach up to the *Evangelika *incident (1901)
known as *Gospel Riots, *when 8 students from the University of Athens were
killed while demonstrating against a translation of the Gospels into "the
peoples' language."
Level: This course is intended for those with some experience in Classical
and Modern Greek, though English translations will be provided.
Textbook: Instructor will provide materials.
Schedule: Wednesdays at 1pm EST
Instructor: Ilias Kolokouris
