Abstract

Thousands of refugees and migrants recently reached the shores of the
island of Lesvos, arriving at Europe's gateway, seeking protection and
employment. The island reached international fame and attention, while
islanders have been struggling to navigate through the immense changes
that were brought to their daily lives. This paper aspires to enter
this interpretative space, where refugees and islanders
perform their (un)scripted parts in an unfolding historical drama.
Through conversations with islanders, oral histories, observations and
participations, as well as a review of the emergent academic
literature, the Lesvos newspaper and police reports, and of
international press and media coverage, the paper will enter a terrain
where western and local moralities about humanity are interrogated: it
will discuss that while "the refugee" is treated as a sacred object by
western humanitarians, islanders engage in this unfolding drama with a
different morality stemming from their historical experience and
memory. It will conclude that whereas the humanitarians departed and
never kept their promise, islanders continue to struggle with refugees
and migrants.
