A seminar with Sotirios Paraschas (King’s College London).
This paper aims to explore the conditions of possibility of prose fiction authorship in nineteenth-century Greece by examining the discourses that lend legitimacy to the occupation of the author and by placing the Greek case in its European context. How and why does the notion of memory become an aesthetic category from which Greek prose fiction writers draw their authority? Taking into account the ‘prehistory’ of Greek authorship before the appearance of the figure of the professional author, this paper will examine the terms – and accuracy – of what is usually described as a shift from imagination to memory (in the 1870s and 1880s), a shift often (problematically) presented as the equivalent of European realism. It will focus on three transitional authorial figures which move towards the emblematic form of the memory-based narrative, the short story, ‘abandoning’ the status of the novelist (Papadiamantis), the poet (Vizyenos) and the λόγιος (Roidis).
