[MGSA-L] TAN - Praying for Palmyra

The term "war crime" is open to interpretation, especially when it comes to the question of asymmetric warfare, in which the rules of engagement become blurred and the current international laws of armed conflict are inexorably encroached upon, or even overtly violated. No decent, civilized person condones the use of lethal force let alone, a relentless aerial bombardment campaign, akin to area bombing, resulting in mass civilian casualties. But this is the grim reality of war. Ultimately, when all is said and done, the concert celebrating Palmyra's liberation, directed by Kremlin's favorite conductor Valery Gergiev, is a celebration of life and a ray of hope in a region tormented by unthinkable savagery. This is particularly the case when the video in question is juxtaposed to a videoclip featuring the choreography of a mass execution scene committed by teenaged executioners in the same amphitheater only months before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3jJ0XNinXg
These gruesome images pose particular challenges and dilemmas regarding the ethics of war. Is there a "moral innocence" on the part of teenaged (or adult) combatants fighting on behalf of al-Nusra [Front] or other radical islamist groups, many of whom are embedded within the civilian population in refugee camps near Aleppo?
