Rethinking Greece: Yiorgos Anagnostou on Greek America, Greek American studies and the diasporic perspective as syncretism and hybridity

Ohio State University Professor of Modern Greek and American ethnic studies Yiorgos Anagnostou spoke with Rethiniking Greece* about the need of empowering Greek American Studies, third-generation Greek America and their “struggle and success” narrative as well as narratives that promote citizenship as personal fulfillment and entrepreneurialism, the encounter of Greek immigrants with U.S. racial hierarchies, American Hellenic identity and various interpretations of classical Greece, as well as the hybridity/syncretism element in the diasporic experience and its relation to what scholars in Modern Greek studies propose as a fruitful concept through which to understand Modern Greece.
