A Happiness after Death?

Demetrios Capetanakis on Philosophy and Proust
Emmanuela Kantzia
The American College of Greece
Stanley J. Seeger Visiting Research Fellow, Hellenic Studies

Respondent: André Benhaïm, French and Italian

Born in Smyrna, educated in Athens, Heidelberg and Cambridge, Demetrios Capetanakis (1912-1944) was a multilingual Greek intellectual and poet whose work (part of which is yet unpublished) is of particular interest to the fields of Modern Greek Literature, Comparative Literature, and Translation Studies. Capetanakis was among the first Greek intellectuals who engaged with the work of Marcel Proust in the early 1930s. His study of Proust survives in four different linguistic versions (German, French, English, and Greek) in either published or manuscript form. A look at the composition, translation, and publication history of this work reveals the challenges that Capetanakis' case presents for textual scholarship and editorial practice. At the same time, Capetanakis' reading of Proust showcases the bold synthesis of Platonic idealism with the philosophy of Existenz that he attempted, as well as his original approach to literature as a privileged site of and for philosophy.

Emmanouela Kantzia received her A.B. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. She has taught modern Greek Literature at the University of Athens and the University of Cyprus as a Visiting Lecturer; at College Year in Athens (CYA); and at the American College of Greece. Her interests include nineteenth century short fiction, European symbolism and modernism, memory and narrative, and the intersections between literature and philosophy. She has published papers on these topics and a book-length study of Georgios Vizyenos. Her current research project involves the unpublished work of Demetrios Capetanakis.
