The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applications for a fulltime university lectureship in Ottoman history and culture. This is a replacement position for two years starting August 2016.

Key responsibilities

• Original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels;
• Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in the BA and MA programs in Middle-Eastern Studies, the BA in International Studies, the MA in International Relations and other programs and courses as appropriate; supervision of BA and MA theses; contributions to curriculum development. Teaching duties may include courses on Ottoman history and culture, the Ottoman Empire in regional and global configurations, theories and methods in Middle-Eastern Studies, and history and culture of/in the Modern Middle East;
• Administrative duties;
• Representation of the field to external audiences and media.

Selection Criteria

• Specialist knowledge of Ottoman history and culture, including the ability to work with primary Ottoman source material (preferably manuscripts); survey knowledge of the Middle East at large; affinity with Middle-Eastern Studies and with a vision of area studies as the nexus of disciplinary and regional expertise; the ability to work from interdisciplinary, transnational and transregional, and comparative perspectives;
• A PhD degree in a relevant field. Candidates near completion of the degree will be considered;
• A research and publication record that is commensurate with career stage. Research experience in Turkey or other locations relevant to the study of Ottoman history and culture;
• Commitment to high-quality teaching practice, and wide teaching scope in terms of content;
• An excellent command of Ottoman Turkish and Modern Turkish;
• An excellent command of English. The relevant MA programs and the BA program in International Studies are offered in English, and English may be used in the BA in Middle-Eastern Studies as well.

The Faculty of Humanities and the LIAS

The lecturer will hold a position in the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS<http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lias/>). LIAS is comprised of a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies, with international staff and student populations. Terms and conditions

Appointment will be fixed-term from August 2016, for a period of two years.

Salary range from € 3.400,- to € 4.654,- gross per month (pay scale 11), commensurate with qualifications, with substantial holiday and end-of-year bonuses. Depending on qualifications, the lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until s/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. If the successful applicant doesn’t speak Dutch, the possibility of University-funded language training may be considered. Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the successful applicant may be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs).
