Dear colleagues,

I would like to present to you OLLAS (Online Language Assessment System, http://www.greeklanguagetest.gr/intro.aspx), a recently completed web-based system for assessing language proficiency of young and adolescent learners of Greek as a second/additional language. It was developed by the Institute for Language and Speech Processing / R.C. "Athena" (http://www.ilsp.gr) and co-funded by the Greek Ministry of Education and the European Union as a project of the Education and Lifelong Learning program.
OLLAS is created on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe 2001) and assesses listening and reading comprehension as well as use of Greek (lexis and grammar). It has been developed as an adaptive system; i.e. test items are selected during the assessment procedure on the basis of what is known about the examinee from the answers she has already given. The system caters for two age groups: a) 7-11 year-old children, b) 12-15 year-old adolescents. The children's test covers levels from A1 to B1, while the adolescents' test covers levels A1 to B2.
OLLAS is addressed to second language learners in the Greek educational system, such as immigrants and minority populations. However, we think that it could be useful to anyone teaching Greek as a second/additional language.

I would also like to use this opportunity to present another web-based platform, "Akousma" (http://www.xanthi.ilsp.gr/akoustikh ), which was created some years ago, but may still be useful to teachers of Modern Greek. It addresses young and adolescent language learners who need to enhance their listening skills (more information here: http://www.ilsp.gr/en/component/jresearch/?view=project&task=show&id=51). "Akousma" was also developed by ILSP/RC "Athena".

Best wishes for a wonderful start to the new academic year.
