Molly Greene's recently (August 2015) published book, The Edinburgh History of the Greeks 1453 to 1768: the Ottoman Empire, presents a general narrative of the Greek experience during the Ottoman centuries. The last time such a narrative was attempted was in 1961 with the publication of A. Vacalopoulos, Historia tou Neou Hellenismou (History of Modern Hellenism.). In this talk the author will discuss the ways in which her narrative departs from that of Vacalopoulos, and the reasons behind these revisions.
Molly Greene is Professor of History and Hellenic Studies, as well as Associate Chair in the Department of History. Her primary research interest is the Greek world under Ottoman rule. Her previous publications include A Shared World: Christians and Muslims in the Early Modern Mediterranean (Princeton, 2000) and Catholic Pirates and Greek Merchants: A Maritime History of the Mediterranean (Princeton, 2010).
