Ernestine Friedl, an anthropologist who pioneered in the study of Greece with her book, Vasilika: A Village in Modern Greece, published in 1963, died October 11 at the age of 95. She had a marvelous career spanning seven decades. She graduated from Hunter college and received her PhD from Columbia. After brief teaching stints are Brooklyn COllege and Wellesley College, she settled in at Queens COllege of CUNY until 1973 when she named James B. Duke Professor of Anthropology and Chair of the department at Duke University. Later she served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Duke and there is a building there named in her honor. Along the way she had visiting professorships at Harvard and Princeton. She was President of the American Ethnological Society and also of the American anthropological Association. For eight years she served on the board of the National Science Foundation and for five years she edited the Journal of Modern Greek Studies. She was a gracious individual who inspired many anthropologists. She will be great ly missed.
