Subject: 12th International Congress of Cretan Studies - 1st Circular (reminder)

12th International Congress of Cretan Studies / 12th ICCS (Heraklion 21-25 September 2016)

Growing interest on Cretan archaeology, history and ethnography since the end of the Second World War, led to the foundation of a scientific institution, where researchers from around the world could have the opportunity to present their findings. The International Congress of Cretan Studies (ICCS) was instituted by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies in 1961 when the first Congress was held in Heraklion. Since then the International Congresses of Cretan Studies have been conducted every five years without fail, having become an institution of global renown. The 3.254 original papers presented by Greek and foreign researchers since 1961 and made accessible to the general public through the multivolume editions of the proceedings of each conference, bear witness today of its 50 years of success and prestige.

The Society of Cretan Historical Studies is currently organizing the 12th ICCS to be held in Heraklion from the 21st to the 25th of September 2016. Its proceedings will be divided into three main sections which correspond to the three long periods of Cretan history and include: a) the Prehistoric and Ancient Greek period, b) the Byzantine and Medieval period, and c) the Modern period (up to the late 20th century). The Congress Languages shall be Greek, English, French, German and Italian and the selected thematic axis for all three sections of the 12th ICCS shall be mobility in reference to Crete and to people, population, goods, services, practices, or aspects of social and ideological movements and mobility.

Please find attached the 1st Circular of the conference and please forward it to all interested (deadline for abstract submission: 30th November 2015).
