MGS 150: Modern Greek I

Modern (demotic) Greek for beginners emphasizing oral expression, listening comprehension, read-ing and writing. Grammar introduced in context of readings. The fifth hour of this class will be conducted online. For students entering before Fall 2014, this class counts for GE Segment 2. For students entering Fall 2014 or later, this class may count for GE lower division. For courses in ancient Greek language and literature, please consult the class schedule under “Greek”, GRE.  [5 units]

MGS 152: Modern Greek Conversation

Emphasizing aural-oral skills, provides practical contexts for conversational modern Greek derived from instructional videos, DVDs, and on-line tutorials.
Prerequisite: MGS 150/GRE 150 or consent of instructor.
For students entering Fall 2014 or later, this class may count as an overlay global perspectives. [2 units]

MGS/ENG 380: British and American Travellers to Greece

Survey of the genre of travel writing to Greece by British, American, and Postcolonial writers from the Romantic to the postmodern periods. Authors include Byron, Woolf, Miller, Durrell, Fermor, Leonard Cohen, and Gillian Bouras. Pre-req: ENG 214.
This course fulfills the following GE categories: upper division, area C:

  *   Enduring Ideas, Values, and Achievements
  *   Human Diversity
  *   World Perspectives

​It also fulfills an upper division overlay in Global Perspectives; it can also fulfill the BA requirement in English for one course in global literatures.  [3 units]

MGS/ENG/CWL 452: Forster, Durrell, Cavafy

Examination of writers E.M. Forster and Lawrence Durrell and their connection to Alexandrian poet C.P. Cavafy. Texts to be studied include Forster’s Alexandria: A History and Guide, Room with a View, Howard’s End, and Passage to India; Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet and the Alexandrian po-ems of C.P. Cavafy. Pre-req: ENG 214.
This course fulfills the following GE category:
Overlay: Global Perspectives
And it also fulfills the following requirement for BA in English, concentration in Literature: one elective course, post-1800 literature. [3 units]

Survey of Greece's prominent modern poets in comparision with major Anglo-American and European poets. Poets to be studied can include Cavafy, Seferis, Elytis, Mastoraki, Yeats, Eliot, Pound, H.D., and Anne Carson. Pre-req: ENG 214. [3 units]
