The members of the Department of History and Archaeology, University of
Crete watching with concern the trial of German historian and university
Ch. Richter, initiated pursuant to Article 2 of the anti-racism law
4285/2014. They feel obliged to state that it is unacceptable and dangerous
to be prosecuted a historian for the views enunciated in scientific
publication. Whatever the objections can be made about the work of Ch.
Richter, freedom of expression and freedom of scientific research should be
given and self-evident, as is required by the Constitution. The members of
the Department of History and Archaeology felt equally obvious that the
response to scientific opinions with which one disagrees is given to
criminal prosecutions, but by sober words counterarguments.
