'Civil Religion' in Greece: A Cultural Analysis of the Social Crisis
Manussos Marangudakis, University of the Aegean and Visiting Fellow at the Department of Sociology, Yale University
The ongoing social crisis in Greece has been examined mainly as an economic and as a political crisis. Yet, little attention has been paid to Greek civil culture and its effects on both the political and economic crisis the country faces today. A close inspection of the political culture in Greece reveals a certain ‘civil religion’, that is, a distinct way Greeks perceive the political self, the civil sphere, and the State. This civil religion, strongly influenced by the Orthodox theology, is manifested in political speeches, public debates, public ceremonies, and historical narrations, and is internalized in moral principles that shape the political self. The political self that emerges out of this civil religion is an entrenched entity, suspicious of the civil sphere, and entrenched vis-à-vis the wider social processes. Pessimistically, the study suggests that as long as the nexus of political and economic power remains exclusive and is monopolized by social elites that thrive on this civil religion, no cultural innovation is due to take place.

The talk is open to the public.
